Sitz Bath Hemorrhoids Treatment the Benefits of Hot and Cold Treatments

A sitz bath consists of a warm water soak used for healing purposes and or cleansing purposes. You soak the affected area in a bath of warm water. The water usually only covers the hips and buttocks. The water may contain epsom salts and or medication.

Sitz baths are commonly prescribed to relieve pain, itching, or swelling. these types of baths are also recommended to facilitate healing after hemorrhoid surgery. A hip bath is often taken using a special basin that fits over your toilet seat and is fed by a tube and a water resevoir, but can also be done in a normal bathtub.

Bath & Body

Some people will opt to add essential oils into the hip bath water such as lavender oils, or tea tree oils. Other herbs that have been known to help in treatments are witch hazel and juniper oils.

When taking a sitz bath the lower abdominal area and genital area is submerged, but the upper part of the body is not. Doctors also recommend that the knees be raised when taking a sitz bath which promotes blood flow to the area, and facilitates healing.

A sitz bath's water temperature should be as hot as you can stand it, but oftentimes is between 95 - 105 degrees Fahrenheit which is 35-41 degrees Celsius.

Warm Sitz Baths are helpful for conditions such as:

hemorrhoids
prostate problems
muscular problems
uterine cramps

Cold Sitz Baths are helpful for conditions such as:

constipation
vaginal discharge
inflammation

As a conclusion sitz baths should be taken for 15-20 minutes about three times per day for best results.
